🍎 Food waste makes up 25–30% of household trash.

♻️ The average American throws away approximately 219 pounds of food annually.

🌎 Reducing food waste helps conserve resources and lowers greenhouse gas emissions.

Thanks to grant funding, Verona Township and Sustainable Verona are launching a free municipal compost pilot program for Verona residents. Why Compost?

  • Reduce Waste. Keep food scraps out of landfills.
  • Fight Climate. Change Lower greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Create Healthy Soil. Food scraps become nutrient-rich compost.
  • Build Sustainable Habits. Small changes make a big impact.

The pilot provides an introduction to composting through a free, easy-to-use drop-off program with Java's Compost. Residents will have the opportunity to:

  • Collect food scraps in their kitchen bucket, using certified compostable bags*
  • Drop scraps at designated compost toters (list of locations below)
  • Receive composting education
  • Help Verona measure the community's impact (Java's Compost will provide #'s on how many pounds of food waste is being diverted)

*compostable bags can be purchased directly from Java's Compost as well as from a variety of other retailers.


How To Participate

Step 1 Register online with Java's Compost (Link coming soon)

Step 2 Attend mandatory compost training. (Link coming soon)

Step 3 Collect food scraps at home.

Step 4 Drop scraps at one of Verona's collection locations.
