Meet this year’s Co-Grand Marshals:

Colonel (Ret.) Joseph A. Simonelli, Jr., affectionately known as “COL Joe,” served our nation with distinction over a decades-long military career that began with his graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1987. Rising through the ranks, he held numerous high-level leadership roles across the Department of Defense, culminating as Chief of Staff of Arlington National Cemetery—one of the nation’s most revered military sites. A veteran of both the Gulf War and Iraq War, Colonel Simonelli participated in Operations Southern Watch, Northern Watch, and Iraqi Freedom.

Throughout his career, Colonel Simonelli demonstrated exceptional leadership in roles ranging from Garrison Commander of Fort Bliss, Texas, to senior policy positions within the Joint Staff. His service has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and Bronze Star Medal. Beyond his military accomplishments, he has continued to serve veterans and their families through extensive involvement in nonprofit and advisory organizations, advocating for the well-being of those who have served.

David H. Hildebrandt, a Vietnam-era Army veteran and lifelong community member. Drafted into the U.S. Army, Mr. Hildebrandt served from 1967 to 1969 in the Air Defense Division, including a tour in Alaska. As a Sergeant, he was entrusted with safeguarding classified materials and critical communications during a pivotal time in U.S. military history.

Following his service, Mr. Hildebrandt built a successful career in the steel industry before establishing his own business in the Caldwell area. A Verona resident since 1967, he has dedicated decades to community service. His passion for youth sports led him to serve as President of the Verona Baseball League, where he coached and mentored generations of local players. Today, Mr. Hildebrandt continues his service to the township, working with the Verona Police Department as a crossing guard and supporting Clean Communities initiatives. Known to many students and families, he plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of children each day.

Verona Township’s Memorial Day parade will take place on Monday, May 25, beginning at Everett Field and concluding at 600 Bloomfield Avenue at Town Hall, a commemorative ceremony with the Mayor and Council will follow.
